London Colney and St. Albans Tae Kwon Do clubs recently went to the 11th London Open Tae Kwon Do Championships. The event, which attracted over 500 competitors from all over the country, is said to be the hardest contact event in the U.K. Chris Snow (5th Degree), a London Colney resident, was the senior coach of the day, made sure all competitors were advised how to stay out of trouble. Chris said 'The contact levels were extreme in some bouts, but our members gave as good as they got'.
Adam Aliousalah, 2nd Degree Black Belt, won gold in sparring - the final was a real crowd pleaser, where Adam dominated a seeded fighter and beat him in true class. Daniel Doran, 8th Kup junior, also won gold in sparring by outclassing all his opponents. Elliott Moulster, 2nd Degree Black Belt, won silver after competing against a worthy opponent who gave him a black eye with a vicious kick to the face. Meanwhile Alicia Chapman, 1st Degree Black Belt, worked her way into the final but lost by a few points to a U.K. seeded fighter. Michael Hillier, 2nd Degree Black Belt, won a bronze in sparring and so did junior member Jade Doran, who won three bouts to get her bronze.
Chris, the senior coach of both schools with 23 years experience in the art and Chairman of the organisation he created in 2004 (the Lions Tae Kwon Do Schools Independent), said "We normally would not entertain such an event, but the students from both clubs wanted to test their skills in an event where head hunters would be present. Between them, the clubs have tallied an amazing 70 gold medals in four years". Chris, who is a seasoned competitor himself and has won many medals for all elements of the art, added "We are not really a competition motivated group, but events like these do provide a platform for those interested in testing their skills firsthand".
The clubs are offering all London Colney residents or readers of this magazine the chance to try two classes FREE of charge - as an added bonus, if you join up in September or October, they will give you a FREE uniform and the first examination FREE when you buy an enrolment pack. The enrolment pack costs just '40 and includes one months' tuition and 12 months membership and insurance. The clubs offer 5 to 10 year olds classes and family classes at all venues. Both clubs have three Instructors on hand to teach at all classes. If you need further assistance, please contact the clubs enrolment line on 01727 822612 or visit the National website www.uk-ltsi.com which will give you further info on the Instructors and the groups' successes to date.
