Tae Kwon Do Success
All members of the London Colney Tae Kwon Do team gained medals at this yearıs local UTA tournament that was held at the Leisure Centre in Stevenage. "We usually do very well at these tournaments but this year we did even better than I was expecting," said Mr David Miles the club instructor.
This is even more remarkable since so many of the club members entered the competition. The team did well in both the Pattern section where points are awarded for the skill in performing the different routine moves and techniques called Patterns and in Sparring. Patterns lie at the heart of Tae Kwon Do and individuals learn ever more difficult patterns as they gain more experience. Individuals can choose which pattern to perform for the competition so it allows anybody who enters to have an equal chance of winning whatever his or her grade. Sparring, which is a bit like boxing, also requires considerable skill but still even the youngest can compete. Sparring can be very exciting both for the competitors and spectators. Mr Lubbock had to do a total of 3 extra one minute sessions before the judges finally awarded him the gold. This was a very tense moment for club members as they watched and cheered him on to victory. "It's good to see so many families at these events especially when all members can compete on equal terms" said Mr Radisic, the clubıs assistant instructor, whose two daughters Andrea and Marija are experienced at Tae Kwon Do.
This was especially so of the London Colney team where five families entered, ranging from dads and daughters to mums and their sons. Mrs Bina Ramvrat Taylor and her two sons were especially pleased since all three had only just started Tae Kwon Do. There is great team spirit at the club meetings which are held every Monday and Wednesday at London Colney JMI but tournaments provide the experience of entering competitions which builds confidence and a sense of achievement.
