What image does this word conjure up? World War II's Dig for Victory, or an old boy in a flat cap among the cabbages? Another image is of a derelict, weed infested area awaiting development.
Think again and picture people of all ages and backgrounds working in the open air, producing organic foods, (some you have never seen growing before), sharing seeds and plants with each other. All this builds up our community, breaking barriers down, making a shared life in London Colney. Allotments also generate income to offset the the cost to the Council.
I have taken the National Society of Allotment and Leisure Gardeners concept of allotments one step further and have used my allotment to build up a collection of flowering plants, fully accredited and registered with the National Council of Conservation of Plants and Gardens. Yes, therre are fruit and vegetables grown in between because, after all, the taste of a sun ripened strawberry, picked and eaten immediately, is fantastic.
