I have sympathy for those of you who have to commute every day into London. While training to be a minister at a London college these last three years I got a taste of the journey. If I was lucky enough to fit onto a train I would squeeze into a gap with my face buried in a businessman's hot armpit. Not good. Apparently Britain has the longest commute in Europe at an average of 45mins. That's a lot of time to play Sudoku, listen to the ipod or find yourself sleeping and dribbling onto a strangers shoulder. But you start to recognise people and their routines. You discover what books they like to read. And sometimes, those books are religious ones. More than once I have seen people on their way to work reading a Bible.
Now why would anyone bother reading a Bible, especially at that time of the morning? Well, the reason is not just so that readers can find some fun stories, interesting philosophical ideas, and a few bits of trivia for the Pear and Partridge pub quiz. No, you see Christians make a pretty bold claim about this book. They say it's the living word of God. In other wordsŠit's an inbox full of text messages from your creator. At times it's easy to understand. At others it can seem like a mystery hence the need for church, a place where people can come together to discuss and explore what this book is actually saying. It's also a book that people have given their lives for and millions throughout the world, including myself claim that it changed their lives. Though I might add that strictly speaking it's not the book itself that has changed lives. It doesn't have magical powers with holy lasers coming out of it! But rather it has the amazing perk of being a book which offers you to meet the author. God can meet with us through the Bible, where ever we may be, including the 6:36 to Brighton.
Could it really be possible that God might have a message buried in its pages just for you? There's only one way to find out. Open it up and have a look. You are bound to have questions when you do so feel free to contact us or any of the other churches in the village. Try starting with one of the Gospels like Mark and see what you think. You may well find yourself intrigued. website: www.lcbc.ik.com Tel: 01727 825450 email: jplaws@ntlworld.com Sunday services 10:30-11:30am on Kings Road
