TheBase - Join Us
The Base is looking for residents of London Colney to join our management committee.
What is the Base?
The Base is a centre for young people aged 11-19 and is located on London Colney High Street. The Base aims to:
Provide education and support on health issues which affect young people. Provide an information service.
Provide opportunities for the development of personal and social skills within a social education and recreational framework.
Provide a confidential counselling service.
The Base is a partnership project, a charity and a company limited by guarantee. There is a full time project coordinator and youth support workers who staff the evening sessions (Tues & Weds 7pm-9:30pm) and football sessions. The project is supported by a number of volunteers, who assist with IT maintenance, website design, admin etc. The project is managed by a management committee that consists of members of the local community and representatives of various local agencies. The Base also runs a counselling service that consists of a counselling coordinator, a supervisor and two volunteer counsellors. What do management committee members do?
Management committee members meet once every six weeks (usually on a Monday or Thursday evening) to discuss activities at the Base and provide direction for future activities. The management committee allocates funds and guides the activities of the Base. The Project Coordinator and treasurer give reports at meetings in order to provide the committee with the necessary information. What skills would I need to have?
You do not need to have any particular skills. You do need to be interested in and have empathy with young people (aged 11-19) as well as having an understanding of their needs. In addition, the following skills would be very useful: publicity skills, interviewing skills, bookkeeping or financial skills, management skills, knowledge of health and safety, experience of working with young people, office skills, fundraising skills, artistic ability or coaching skills.
What is the time commitment?
You need to be able to come to management committee meetings which take place about every 6 weeks and last for one and a half to two hours. People support the Base in lots of different ways and it does not need to take up a lot of your time. It might mean advising on something, working with the project coordinator or another member of staff on a small project, organising a small fundraising event, helping to interview volunteers, or displaying leaflets and posters at your place of work. Management committee members raise the profile of the Base and publicise our activities by letting people know what we do. This is often whilst they are carrying out whatever activities they are normally involved in, it does not have to mean lots of time-consuming meetings!
Recent Activities at the Base
We have carried out a number of 4-8 week projects including: girls' projects, boys' projects, dragon making for the carnival, healthy eating cooking projects, cooking food from around the world, music projects, a photography project, Kick-it football project, CD and DVD- making, DJ workshops. We also provide information on a variety of topics including alcohol, drugs, smoking, healthy eating, physical activity, sexual health, staying safe in the sun and using the internet safely. We get involved in local community events such as Larks in the Park and have organised a number of trips: Midnight Ice skating, Go Karting, meals in restaurants, Motorbike Project, Dry ski slope skiing. In addition, The Base provides free computer facilities and access to the internet, a pool table, a cafe area, a recreational area and a quiet space.
The Base has a website which was created by a 15 year old volunteer and we have recently launched an online advice column called Ask Auntie Annie.
