| Be A Host |
|
Last Monday I was working in the garden when my phone rang. "Hello this is 'Jerry', are you doing anything special today?" I said, "No. Why?" He then asked if he could call in to see his 'English Mum' as it was his Birthday and he would like to share this with us!
Jerry was a HOST UK student who visited us in March 2004. He was studying at the University and has kept in touch with us via e-mail both from China and in the UK. Jerry has also visited us again since his first visit with various presents and friends from China.
So in the time Jerry took to get ready and catch a bus, I made a Birthday Cake and found some candles.
It was a wonderful surprise for both Jerry and his new wife Toni. They were married in June of this year in Beijing. So we were also pleased to meet Toni and had an enjoyable Chinese Tea and Cakes. The remains of which, they took to share with their friends at the University.
If anyone would like to have this experience of sharing their home with an International Student/s for either a day, weekend, Christmas, New Year or Easter, they could have some wonderful experiences and surprises. These students treasure their visits and never forget their stay in an English Home, the wonderful scenery and the many places there are to visit in the county.
At present there are thirty five HOST families in Hertfordshire who welcome International Students into their homes and their lives and we are always needing more!

What is Host About
International Students.
There are thousands of students from all over the world at British Universities and Colleges. As well as pursuing their academic studies, many hope to meet the people and experience the culture here. Yet the majority have little access into the life of the country outside of the campus.
Volunteer Hosts
By offering one or two weekends invitations a year or three day visit over Christmas, hosts can make a great difference to the lives of International Students, and their impressions of Britain. At the same time, the Hosts have the interest and pleasure of making friends with well informed guests of all ages from overseas.
Mutual Benefit
What better way of exploring and learning about a country, than spending time with the people who live here? And what easier way of encountering the rest of the world, than in the comfort of your own home!
Host offers a uniquely personal opportunity to both students and hosts to be ambassadors for their own country and to make positive contributions to international relations.
Host was founded in 1987 by the British Council, the Foreign & Commonwealth Office and the Victoria League.
